to my shopping cartREVIEW: Still Prone to Wander: Jon Mutchler's "Still Prone To Wander" is a sequel to his 2001 solo piano release, "Prone to Wander." The pastor and founder of Ferndale Alliance Church in Washington, Mutchler assembled these improvised hymns to commemorate his twenty years of service to the church. Where the first collection of hymns was mostly soft-spoken and meditative, this new CD is sometimes full of power and passion and is sometimes quiet and reflective. Of his most creative work to date, Mutchler told me, "I tried not to be limited by what others' expectations might be, and went with my gut.... Another way to look at this album is through the parable of prayer. In prayer we can and should express the whole range and extremes of emotions: from joy and peace, to sadness and despair, even anger. ...I tend to think that there is much 'crying out' in some of these songs." With a total of thirteen tracks, this CD presents nine classic hymns in ways you have never heard them (four hymns appear twice with different arrangements). Mutchler holds degrees in both classical piano performance and jazz studies, and those influences are obvious, as is gospel and even pop; his playing is impeccible Mutchler says that he was more interested in expressing his deepest heart, yearnings, and musical prejudices than pleasing anyone else, making his interpretations of these songs deeply personal and extraordinarily honest. More than strictly "church music," these hymns become songs of life and living.
The CD begins with an intense rumbling in the bass end of the piano as powerful chords lead in to "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God." A hymn that is often played rather timidly, Mutchler brings to it a sense of majesty and strength. Over the course of eight minutes, he goes in several different directions - sometimes playing the melody and sometimes improvising - but never wavers from a bold and triumphant statement. "Untitled Hymn (Come to Jesus)" is a contemporary hymn and is much quieter and more pensive. Most people know "For The Beauty of the Earth," but the repeated bass line and syncopated melody make it contemporary and fresh. "We Gather Together" is a standard hymn of Thanksgiving, and Mutchler treats it with both gentleness and intense emotion. Mutchler added a new chorus to the old hymn "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus." Tender and soothing, its stirring melody goes right to the heart. "The Doxology, Part 1" begins with the piano strings being plucked, and Mutchler leaves a lot of open space in the melody. Part 2 of the same song is completely different. Its strong, vibrant rhythm makes it an exciting arrangement! The second version of "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" is also quite different from the first, although the majesty and power remain. The second take on "I Need Thee Every Hour" is a humble musical prayer that brings the CD to a quiet and peaceful close.
If you prefer hymns in their traditional form, this might not be the CD for you, but if you like fresh, deeply personal takes on familiar music, check it out. It really doesn't matter if you are into hymns or not - this is some great piano playing in a variety of styles and moods. "Still Prone to Wander" is available from www.jonmutchler.com, cdbaby.com, and amazon.com. Highly recommended!

to my shopping cartREVIEW: La Place Sur La Mer (The Place By the Sea) was conceived as a gift for pianist/ composer Jon Mutchler's sister as part of her 30th wedding anniversary celebration. The title refers to a "magical" bed and breakfast inn in Port Angeles, WA (www.magicalbeach.com) that his sister and her husband own. The thirteen piano solos include seven original compositions and six covers of pieces that reflect Mutchler's sister's life and the spirit of her home. The music conveys a wide variety of moods and musical styles, and Mutchler's arrangements are definitely out of the ordinary and quite intriguing (as well as very enjoyable!). Mutchler is the pastor of the church that he and his wife founded in 1988, and he has degrees in both classical piano performance and jazz studies, bringing to his music a wide range of influences. His recently-released "Still Prone To Wander" is full of musical surprises, as is this one. It is also much more playful and lighthearted, although there are serious moments. Even the cover artwork is unusual, and shows Mutchler sitting on his sister's 1883 7' Bechstein grand piano in the surf with orcas swimming nearby! Mutchler assures me that they didn't actually put the piano in the water!
The CD opens with the title track, a piece that conveys the warmth and beauty of the place and its owners as well as the freedom and spontaneity it inspires. Mutchler's arrangement of Seals and Crofts' classic "Summer Breeze" is both darkly beautiful and comfortable. "Freshwater Bay at Twilight" is a bit more experimental, but is a perfect musical painting of a sunset on the beach, with the light dancing as the calm water keeps the rhythm - gorgeous! "Orca: Black and White" is a fascinating trilogy that begins with Bach's Prelude in Bb Minor (chosen in part because orcas are more black than white and the key of Bb minor has more black keys than white!); the second movement is "Under the Strait of Juan de Fuca," and includes sound effects made with occasional low notes and percussive sounds on the piano case itself - the feeling of depth and mystery is eery but wonderful; this segues into "Orcinus Orca," which combines parts of the prelude with improvisation and gives the feeling of the majesty and power of these graceful animals. This is definitely one of Mutchler's best compositions! Mutchler's arrangements of "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Tara's Theme" are very unexpected - intense rhythm gives both pieces an energy that you don't generally associate with these poignant classics, but it works. "I Loves You, Porgy" is quietly elegant as well as deeply emotional. "Nadean" is a touching tribute to a beloved piano teacher. Apparently Mutchler's sister was a real Beatles' fan, and Mutchler closes the CD with a rousing version of "Here Comes the Sun." His upbeat tempo and bouncy rhythm imbue this classic tune with unbridled joy and enthusiasm. Love it!
Not only is "La Place Sur la Mer" a great hour or so of music, but it makes me want to head north and visit the place and meet Mutchler's much-loved sister! This CD is a lot of fun and contains some terrific piano playing! It is available from www.jonmutchler.com, cdbaby.com, and amazon.com. Recommended!

to my shopping cartREVIEW: Incarnation: Nativity Reflections is a beautiful collection of mostly familiar Christmas music arranged and improvised for solo piano by pianist/composer Jon Mutchler. The thirteen tracks include three original pieces, adding to the personal nature of the album. Most of the pieces are quietly reflective, but a few ramp up the energy level a bit, creating a very nice variety of selections.
The CD begins with a gentle, reflective arrangement of "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel." This ancient piece is updated with some jazz chord voicings that work surprisingly well. The CD contains two versions of Mutchler's "Incarnation Hymn," a thoughtful, pensive piece that is full of emotion and very effective. "Silent Night" is also given some jazz harmonies that perk up the ears without detracting from the song - ever so peaceful and calming. "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" is one of my favorite Christmas songs, and it always amazes me how many ways this song can be approached and interpreted. Mutchler's version has a rhythmic energy and a lot of improvisation that seamlessly make the song new again. Outstanding! I'd buy the CD for this track alone! "O Christmas Tree" is a tender love song that has a sense of wistful wonder. "Coventry Carol" is a real surprise and another favorite. I've never heard this song played with such gusto and power, and it really works. Some of the verses are quieter and softer, but then this assertive left hand comes back with its rhythmic bass. Fascinating! Mutchler's "Holly Beach" refers to his father's longtime home where residents put out paper lanterns every Christmas Eve. "What Child Is This?" is another very unusual arrangement. The first minute of it is very bold with big chords and an interesting rhythm. The beautiful melody weaves in and out of the improvisations, bringing another ancient song right up to date.
"Incarnation: Nativity Reflections" is a wonderful addition to your holiday music collection. The improvisations and original pieces will make it an album you can listen to any time of the year. It is available from www.jonmutchler.com and amazon.com. Recommended! (Review by Kathy Parsons at MainlyPiano.com)

to my shopping cartThis is a collection of favorite hymns of the ages, performed in an original jazz (and slightly new age) style. Very melodic, rhythmic, and rich in color and texture. Absorbing and inspiring. Jon' most popular CD.
REVIEW: Prone to Wander is a fascinating solo piano collection of hymns that are given a jazz and improvisational treatment. Before listening to the CD, I assumed it would be full of toe-tapping gospel rhythms, but these interpretations are of a more contemporary, smooth-jazz style. A full-time pastor in Washington State, these songs are obviously a big part of Jon Mutchler's life and work. He has included twelve traditional hymns (with three of them repeated with alternate stylings) and two original songs of worship. Recorded without edits or corrections, the arrangements are fresh and spontaneous.
I especially like "Oh, For the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus". I'm not familiar with the lyrics to this hymn, but the melody seems to be searching and yet full of hope. Mutchler's rhythmic touches add to the sense of urgency, making this a standout selection on an excellent album! "Jesus Loves Me, This I Know" is given a surprising twist that made me think of Vince Guaraldi. It's amazing that this simple children's Sunday School song could be given such complexity and style! "Amazing Grace" is given almost minimalistic treatment and then expands into a wonderful, easy-going improvisation that meanders in and out of the melody line. It's difficult to come up with an original interpretation of a piece that is heard so often and that has been interpreted by so many varied artists, but Mutchler has succeeded well! Some of the other hymns that are included are "All Creatures of Our God and King", "Blessed Assurance", "Fairest Lord Jesus" (another favorite!), and "Holy, Holy, Holy". The two original songs are "Jesus, Lover of My Soul" and "Under Your Wing (Flying, Soaring)". Both are beautiful and inspiring, but "Under Your Wing" is exceptional. All of the arrangements are low-key enough to be an unobtrusive backdrop for a meeting or quiet time, but do yourself a favor and let the music be the focal point. These wonderful arrangements deserve the listener's full attention, to be savored and enjoyed again and again. "Prone to Wander" is available from www.jonmutchler.com and amazon.com. to my shopping cartThese are some of the most popular songs of today . They are each performed here in a fresh and new interpretation. The style is jazz, but not too "jazzy." The playing is mature, sophisticated, and sharp. You'll recognize the song, but appreciate something new about them. This CD is a hit with lovers of piano music!
REVIEW: Piercing the Heart is a collection of solo piano ballads made up of Jon Mutchler's most-requested songs from performances at his weekend gigs at Resort Semiahmoo in Washington State. Many of the titles are those that would be expected in a collection like this ("Memory", "My Heart Will Go On", "All I Ask of You"), but Mutchler's playing style is not what I expected at all. It is low-key, uncluttered, and distinctive in its thoughtful, soulful manner. Even though most of these pieces are common standards and I'm sure Mutchler must play them often, the improvisations and interpretations sound fresh and new, making this a most enjoyable CD to listen to and savor many times, finding something new each time. Mutchler has an impressive background in both classical and jazz piano, and has been playing professionally since he was a teenager. It is a real pleasure to hear a pianist with the experience and confidence to let the music sing without needing to see how many runs up and down the entire piano he or she can get into every song. These arrangements are subtle and subdued, keeping an easy-going, reflective mood throughout. I especially like Mutchler's take on "Send in the Clowns", "Maria" from "West Side Story", and Richard Rodgers' "My Funny Valentine". I highly recommend "Piercing the Heart" to those who are looking for fresh new interpretations of old favorites (and a few that are not-so-old). Great stuff! "As melodic and lovely as the ballads [in Piercing the Heart], these [hymns from Prone to Wander] are superbly re-worked and arranged by this jazz pianist. Both of these CDs have a calming effect, good for meditative musical background or for serious listening." -- Jeanette Housner, January 2002, Victory Review: Acoustic Music Review Magazine)
I like these cuts [in Piercing the Heart], because they are so familiar and Mutchler plays them with verve, but with enough restful space to make them the perfect accompaniment to any activity, or just for relaxing and listening. It's like the white space around a well typeset poem, giving enough time for each note to resonate, before the next one replaces it. I think if you're looking for pure and simply interpreted tunes this would be an enjoyable listen. -- Wendy R. Ross, in JazzReview.com

Prone to Wander is an original and creative blend of solo piano work that probes the melodic and harmonic depths of some of some of the great hymns. It's almost 73 minutes of inspirational gems performed solo by this outstanding pianist. There's a depth of maturity and emotion here rarely found in today's newer pianists. Mr. Mutchler has woven his talents as a classically trained but jazz-experienced pianist into something very new and special. His renditions of hymns will appeal to the jazz and New Age listener, stretching each a bit! -- from Amazon.com
Piercing the Heart is rich in those favorite and familiar melodies. Out of his 25 years of professional experience as a jazz pianist Jon has selected some of those most requested ballads and offered his own artistic and energetic interpretations on the piano. He has taken the "standards" and recorded many of them in ways other than "standard." This is music that's not only a pleasure to listen to but also music that should be thought about deeply at times. -- from Amazon.com
